Three Premier League Teams Who Desperately Need to Strengthen in the January Transfer Window

January Transfer Window

There have been several Premier League sides who have significantly underperformed during the first quarter of the 2020-21 campaign, and as a result, the majority of those teams will be hoping to dip into the January transfer window. Although the majority of top flight sides are expected to strengthen next month, there are three outfits who desperately need reinforcements in order to remain competitive and avoid dropping into the Championship.

1. Burnley

Although there have been signs of improvement recently, Sean Dyche’s side have won just one of their opening ten Premier League games. The Clarets are the joint-lowest goalscorers in the top flight, and they desperately need to add to their misfiring forward line in January.

The Lancashire outfit haven’t scored more than a single goal in a game since September 20th with striker Chris Wood being the only player to have netted twice so far. The Kiwi enjoyed a terrific season last year, bagging 14 goals in 29 appearances. He’s also enjoyed plenty of success on the International stage, although the forward admits that he was bullied at school for playing football as opposed to Rugby Union. Despite this, the sport has undoubtedly enjoyed a resurgence in recent years with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa helping to create a surge of interest amongst New Zealanders.

Online sports betting sites have been the biggest beneficiaries, with many sportsbooks reporting a significant increase in wagers on both the Premier League and the A-League. Online gambling, in general, has flourished in the region over the last decade, with video slots and live dealer games also proving to be exceptionally popular with Kiwis. Sky City, which is one of the best online casino sites in New Zealand now gives players the chance to enjoy classic table games such baccarat, blackjack as well as video poker on both desktop and mobile devices.

With traction around the sport and its betting markets really picking up, fans are expecting to see more when it comes to their club pulling through. However, with both Ashley Barnes and Jay Rodriguez struggling to recapture last season’s form, Dyche will be desperately seeking an effective strike partner to play alongside the potent Kiwi.

2. Arsenal

The Gunners have been hugely disappointing so far this season, and Mikel Arteta desperately needs attacking reinforcements this winter. The North Londoners are just seven points clear of the relegation zone, and have scored fewer goals than recently promoted Fulham. Even the previously prolific Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appears to be lacking belief, and Arsenal urgently need to recruit a left-winger in order to free up the French-born striker. The Gabon international is most effective when deployed in a central position, and the arrival of left-footed creator, could help the forward rekindle his confidence in front of goal.

An attacking midfielder is also high on the priority list, whilst just three clean sheets in their opening 11 games suggests that another central defender may also be required.

3. Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace

Although Crystal Palace have made a decent start to the 2020-21 campaign, fans are understandably concerned about the club’s over-reliance on playmaker Wilfried Zaha.

The 28-year old has netted seven of the club’s 15 Premier League goals so far this season, and has also claimed a couple of assists. Zaha was absent for a couple of weeks at the end of November, and without their talisman, the Eagles slumped to consecutive defeats and failed to find the net in 180 minutes of football.

He also missed the club’s FA Cup defeat to Derby at the beginning of 2020, and without him in the side, the South Londoners look a little toothless going forward. Palace desperately need to find an alternative, and adding another capable playmaker to their squad would significantly reduce the burden on the Ivory Coast-born star.

These three sides will already be formulating their plan of attack for 2021, and if this top flight trio have any hopes of ending the season on a high, it is imperative that they move quickly to strengthen in key areas in January.
