Indian Premier League’s 2020 edition is scheduled to kick-start on September 19 this year, and the 8 participating teams have already started preparing for the world-renowned cricket event.
Even though Caribbean Premier League starts before the IPL, everyone knows that when it comes to top-level cricketing action, it doesn’t get bigger than the IPL. As batsmen will have to get acclimatized to the UAE conditions, there’s a high chance that bowlers will get ample opportunities to capitalise and significantly increase their wicket counts.
Over the years, there have been several T20 legends such as Dwayne Bravo and Lasith Malinga who’ve won the IPL Purple Cap, a recognition given to the leading wicket taker of the tournament. It was Chennai Super Kings’ Imran Tahir who won the honours in 2019. Let’s look at the 3 dark horses who have a very good chance of winning the Purple Cap this time.
The pace attack of Kings XI Punjab will depend heavily on Mohammad Shami’s services in the upcoming IPL. He’ll also have the responsibility of leading the inexperienced bowling line-up of the Punjab outfit.
After creating a dismal record of 0, 1, 7, 5, 5 and just 3 wickets respectively in his initial 6 IPL seasons, Shami finally showed his true abilities in the 2019 season, finishing his campaign with 19 wickets from 14 matches. Despite the 8.99 career economy rate, Shami is most likely to be entrusted with the most critical overs of the Punjab’s matches, and is expected to deliver too. He’s definitely a dark horse who will have a very good chance of bagging the Purple Cap in IPL 2020.
Cummins has returned back to KKR, the franchisee he started his IPL journey with. He’d be leading their pace attack featuring young guns such as Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi and Prasidh Krishna this time. Having been signed for the biggest sum paid to an overseas player in the IPL’s history, there’s a good chance that he will get to play all the KKR’s matches. It’s not only the cricket pitch, he’ll get plenty of action in both actual and virtual sports betting markets too.
Cummins has featured in only one IPL season so far, with Delhi Capitals in the year 2017. In that campaign, he took a total of 15 wickets from 12 matches, at 8.07 economy rate. The Australian pacer is yet to prove his abilities in the death overs, but is guaranteed to rise up to the occasion when the moment comes. With multiple variations and good pace, Cummins could very well take home the Purple Cap this time.
After not getting ample opportunities at both KKR and SRH, Boult made his presence felt in the 2018 season with the Delhi Capitals. He took a total of 18 wickets in that campaign.
Although he could only take 5 wickets in 5 matches in 2019, he will definitely create a good impact for Mumbai Indians this IPL.
With Lasith Malinga not getting any younger, Boult will be partnering with Jasprit Bumrah in the pace department throughout the tournament. Having top-rated speedsters around him is only going to boost his confidence further. Furthermore, he is a bowler who can be trusted with both new ball and during the death overs.
