Let’s start with a research study published in 2013 in the African Journal for Physical Health Education, recreation, and Dance. These researchers focused on the relationship between mental skills and level of cricket participation. It’s a highly relevant study, based on the notion that the physiological and biomechanical harmonization of movement requires several aspects of psychological involvement.
The findings revealed that cricket players were insufficiently aware of the psychological aspects related to their performance. They didn’t spend enough time working on their psychological skills; their trainers forced them to only develop their physiological skills related to the game.
Nevertheless, when senior cricket players were compared to participants at lower levels in terms of self- confidence, they achieved significantly better results. Those characterized by natural mental toughness have a better chance to become high-performing athletes. This particular research study emphasized the importance of implementing mental toughness programs for cricketers at beginner levels. These programs would include social support and motivational climate, which would improve the players’ focus and mental toughness during their early stages of development.
Cricket Is a Mental Game
When we watch cricket, we focus on physical performance. It’s only natural for a fan to admire a player’s strength, speed, and stamina. But we rarely consider the focus and mental strength that it takes for these players to endure long hours of playing and countless days of training before game day.
The best players have something more than skills related to physical and technical performance. They know how to manage their emotions, strategize, think, and concentrate on specific elements of the game. The physical attributes of mobility, strength, coordination, and speed are dependent on the player’s mental toughness.
These research studies are essential for improving one’s performance on the field. They show that in addition to physical training, athletes need to focus on their mental skills as well.
